Prime Video‘s epic fantasy pick-up continues to perform.
The streamer is known for being the platform that bets big on fantasy adaptations, with dramas such as Rings of Power, which is another story in the Lord of the Rings universe, and the faith-based House of David, which will continue its story with season 3. But it has also had some higher-profile originals that were unable to go the distance. That was the case with the controversial Wheel of Time cancellation.
The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin, which is based on the books of the same name by author Stephen R. Lawhead, streams on Prime Video. The seven-episode drama has maintained a strong output in the Top 10 in recent weeks, and is now climbing higher still to the point where it is nearing Prime Video’s biggest originals.
The Pendragon Cycle Is Putting A Spell On Prime Video
Rise of Merlin is nearing the top spot on Prime Video. As of this writing, the adaptation is #4 in the United States and #5 in Canada on Amazon’s list of Top 10 shows. It marks a largely uninterrupted climb for the series, though it was previously at #3 in the U.S. on the same chart back on September 19.
The response to Rise of Merlin is clearer when viewed through Prime Video’s Overall Top 10 list. It’s currently #5 in both the U.S. and Canada, coming just behind the viral romantic comedy movie The Love Hypothesis, in addition to Reacher, Reacher‘s spinoff Neagely, and the breezy young adult mystery Sterling Point. It is currently ahead of the breakout hit Off Campus.
The Streamer Has Become The Ultimate Fantasy Home
The Pendragon Cycle centers on Merlin as the immortal son of Taliesin and Atlantean Princess Charis. The story examines the titular character’s upbringing and how that fueled his fall to madness. There is also the shocking disappearance that plays a part in the towering legend that Merlin ultimately enjoys.
The story, which is set before King Arthur’s birth, with Tom Sharp in the lead role, helps to point to the fact that Prime Video’s bet on fantasty is helping to build a sense of consistency with audiences. Although the biggest titles, like The Wheel of Timeand even Rings of Power, may have stumbling blocks, the genre itself is sturdy enough and its audience tends to be loyal enough to want to seek out any new additions that they find.
