Besides Wiccan and Speed, Scarlet Witch can now pride herself on giving life to a powerful new Marvel hero who may become an important ally to Wanda Maximoff and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes later down the line. Scarlet Witch’s magical powers are among the most versatile in the Marvel Universe, as her ability to alter probability has expanded to encompass virtually all of reality. Wanda Maximoff possesses magical knowledge that allows her to accomplish basically anything, especially now that she holds the Sorcerer Supreme mantle in the absence of Doctor Strange.
However, Wanda also stands out due to her role as a mother. Scarlet Witch is one of Marvel’s most famous mother figures, as her love for her twin sons Wiccan and Speed has been at the forefront of her journey on Earth-616 and several other timelines. Wanda’s love for her children famously bordered on obsession in House of M, where the realization that Tommy and Billy weren’t fully real led her to rewrite reality and cemented her as one of the world’s most dangerous superheroes.
Wiccan and Speed are now experienced heroes themselves, and Wanda has given them the freedom to build their life journeys independently, but her motherly instincts are still just as strong.
Scarlet Witch Brings A Sentient Magical Cannon Into Existence
Sorcerer Supreme #8; Written By Steve Orlando; Art By Bernard Chang And Ruth Redmond
As Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, Scarlet Witch has successfully protected her reality from a number of magical threats that no other hero would have even known how to confront. Recently, Wanda Maximoff saw herself overpowered by a mysterious orb who threatened to consume reality, but thankfully, Turin the Quantumancer from the Quantum Realm arrived just in time to help. While Wanda and Turin stopped the “Maw”, they realized that it was only part of a bigger threat: a magical, invisible cannon that only someone using the “Pupils of Prine Putpravda” could detect. Fast-forward to Sorcerer Supreme #8, and Scarlet Witch has helped this cannon to gain sentience and an anthropomorphic form.
The Extinction Weapon “Necropsy” is one of many incredibly destructive tools of war created by the Extinction King eons ago, each with ammunition capable of ripping holes in reality. The cannon Wanda and Turin face is fortified with Thaumaturgy from the Great Old Ones, and it undoes any damage the heroes inflict on it, so instead of trying to destroy it directly, Wanda breathes life into it. The cannon develops “higher thought and language,” which it uses to question its existence. Wanda completes the being’s birth by giving it a name, Eovan, and teaching it the power of free will before letting it go to explore the universe.
Wanda Maximoff Is An Experienced Mother Figure
Scarlet Witch Knows Exactly What Child Characters Need
Wanda manages to stop the “Necropsy” cannon not only because of her experience as a magician and as Sorcerer Supreme, but also because of her experience as a mother to children with unique origins. Scarlet Witch famously raised two sons she eventually realized weren’t entirely real, and she later reunited with their reincarnations. Therefore, Wanda knows exactly how to deal with the philosophical dilemma of individuals who aren’t born like regular living beings, knowledge she expertly uses in a crash course on sentience during her conversation with Eovan the Cannon.
Besides, Wanda also spent years alongside Vision, a synthezoid being who never had a true childhood, and who once famously lost all his memories and sense of self. If there’s something not strictly related to magic that Scarlet Witch understands, it’s that the very experience of existing and feeling aren’t straightforward. So, in Sorcerer Supreme #8, the act of transforming a magical cannon into a living being is only a means to an end. What truly saves Earth from certain destruction is Wanda’s ability to teach a weapon how to be conscious and what free will means.
