August will officially mark the end of an era for Supernatural’s Sam and Dean. However, this ending is only the beginning of a new chapter. Kicking off next month, the Winchester brothers will deliver what will essentially be a forgotten chapter of their story. However, this next era will be unlike anything fans have experienced before, as Supernatural is making a major change to the status quo that has defined the brothers’ stories for years.
In 2020, fans said goodbye to Sam and Dean in the CW series finale. However, those who have been keeping up with all things Supernatural know that the brothers returned in 2025 in Dynamite’s Supernatural comic series. The series brought Sam and Dean back to the beloved monster-of-the-week format, with the story taking place between Seasons 1 and 2 of the CW continuity. However, even this series is now coming to an end on August 26, 2026, with Greg Pak and Dan Scalzzi’s Supernatural #10.
The end of this series, though, is only the beginning of a brand-new era for the Winchester brothers at Dynamite. The duo are set to return on September 2, 2026, in Paulina Ganucheau and John Amor’s Supernatural Special: Wayward #1. This one-shot special will set the stage for two separate ongoing Supernatural series, but there’s one major catch: the brothers won’t be together.

One of the defining elements of the CW series was that Sam and Dean’s monster hunting always saw the two brothers working together as a team, or fighting to reunite with each other. However, Dynamite is now preparing to challenge that status quo by splitting the two brothers apart. This split will begin in the 48-page Wayward special, which will answer the question: “Sam and Dean Winchester are bound by blood and purpose – so what horrible, hellish forces could drive these brothers to travel separate roads?”
This game-changing event will set the stage for Dynamite’s two upcoming series: Supernatural: Sam Winchester #1 and Supernatural: Dean Winchester #1. As their titles suggest, each series will follow one of the Winchester brothers as they work separately rather than together. Despite being solo series, the two titles will remain interconnected, meaning fans should read Wayward first before following Sam and Dean’s respective stories for the best reading experience.
Both titles are slated for release on October 21, 2026. Supernatural: Dean Winchester #1 will be spearheaded by writer Chuck Brown and artist Rapha Lobosco, while writer Paulina Ganucheau and artist Kendall Goode will take the lead on Supernatural: Sam Winchester #1. Thanks to the early solicitations for both titles, fans also get a glimpse at what may have caused the brothers’ dramatic split.
The official synopsis for Sam Winchester teases: “After doing something to his brother that he can never take back, the younger Winchester brother finds himself drawn toward a mysterious farmhouse in the middle of nowhere… but what is it hiding?” Meanwhile, the synopsis for Dean Winchester further reveals, “He’s hurt. He’s alone. It’s Mardi Gras. The streets of New Orleans are crawling with creepiness, and the elder Winchester brother is determined to close a case his dad never could. To do so, he might have to murder a god.”
Fans should note that the two titles will essentially act as a missing season of the CW’s Supernatural, given that these stories are part of the franchise’s canon and are confirmed to take place during the early years of the original Supernatural continuity. The exact placement remains under wraps, but with Sam and Dean split up for the first time for an extended period, this promises to be a Supernatural story unlike any other.
Supernatural Special: Wayward #1 from Dynamite will be available to read on September 2, 2026!
