Sydney Sweeney’s Extremely NSFW Thriller Is Officially No. 1 Movie on Streaming

A theatrical success headlined by Sydney Sweeney has found a second wave of attention on streaming. The adult-oriented psychological thriller has quickly climbed past several established genre favorites.

The Housemaid is already HBO Max’s No. 1 movie after its debut

According to FlixPatrol’s HBO Max’s U.S. streaming chart, Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid has reached the No. 1 movie position on October 11, overtaking Backrooms. It also moved ahead of Evil Dead Burn, Coraline, Corpse Bride, Supergirl, and The Departed.

Box Office Mojo puts the film’s worldwide haul at more than $400 million, with overseas markets contributing $274 million and North America adding another $126.4 million. Against an estimated $35 million production budget, the movie became a substantial box-office hit.

Paul Feig brings Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel to the screen with a 133-minute adaptation that fuses psychological tension with elements of an erotic thriller. Rebecca Sonnenshine penned the screenplay, with Sydney Sweeney taking the lead alongside Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. Michele Morrone and Elizabeth Perkins round out the supporting cast.

The Housemaid has earned a generally positive response from critics, though its appeal has not been universal. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 74% Tomatometer rating based on 202 reviews. Many fans agree that it is an entertaining movie, backed by the cast’s performances and the story’s twists. The Housemaid also holds a 92% audience score based on more than 5,000 verified ratings. On IMDb, the thriller has earned a 6.7 out of 10 from over 200,000 user votes.

Lionsgate brought The Housemaid to theaters in December 2025, with Hidden Pictures and Media Capital Technologies backing the production. Paul Feig teamed up with Todd Lieberman and Laura Fischer to produce the thriller. After making waves at the box office, the film has found a fresh lease on life through its rapid rise on HBO Max, putting it back in the spotlight and introducing it to another wave of fans who missed it in theatres.
