BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 45 Review: “Defend You”

At this point, BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War has already delivered more than enough incredible episodes to make ranking them feel almost pointless. “The Fire”, “The Blade Is Me,” “I Am the Edge”, “Black,” “The Master,” “The Betrayer,” and the previous episode, “The Perfect Crimson,” have all provided moments that longtime fans have waited years to see animated and expanded upon. Yet somehow, this BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 45, “Defend You,” not only surpasses all of them, but does so while fundamentally changing everything about what manga readers thought they knew about the final battle. 

This is BLEACH operating at its absolute peak. The battle between Ichigo (Masakazu Morita / Johnny Yong Bosch) and Yhwach (Takayuki Sugō / Richard Epcar) takes center stage once again, and despite Ichigo unlocking his Hollow-infused new power, it quickly becomes apparent that Yhwach remains on an entirely untouchable level.

Ichigo can hit harder, move faster, and unleash attacks that look like they could tear the universe itself apart, but Yhwach simply keeps regenerating and overpowering everyone. Even the combined efforts of Ichigo, Orihime (Yuki Matsuoka / Stephanie Sheh), and eventually Rukia Kuchiki (Fumiko Orikasa / Michelle Ruff) don’t seem enough to overcome him.

Obviously, let’s talk Orihime. The anime has spent much of this final battle in Thousand-Year Blood War expanding Orihime’s role beyond what she received in the manga, and “Defend You” is the ultimate payoff to that rightful decision.

Her inner monologue runs through BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 45 as she repeatedly curses her own supposed weakness and wishes she could do more – to “reject” all of the fear, pain, and suffering not just currently happening in front of her, but throughout the entire world. Yet while she questions whether she is strong enough to protect Ichigo, she is literally throwing herself between him and death over and over again.

Yhwach impales her. She rejects the mortal injury. He destroys Ichigo. She brings him back. He attacks again. She rejects the damage to herself and keeps going. He destroys Ichigo anew. She revives him anew. Over and over. It becomes less about Orihime possessing enough power to defeat Yhwach and more about the sheer refusal to stop protecting the person she loves.

The irony is particularly fantastic, considering Yhwach’s monologue in BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 45 is that using power merely to protect others (rather than dominate them) is a weakness. Orihime spends the entire episode proving the exact opposite.

How power gets used (protecting versus dominating) becomes a driving theme.

Seeing Ichigo and Rukia fighting side-by-side again is also one of those moments that feels enormously significant after everything these characters have been through. Their old comedic rhythm immediately returns, even in the middle of an apocalyptic battle. 

This makes the sequence feel like a genuine full-circle moment from the earliest days of the series. The anime adding Rukia to this portion of the battle is one of several major changes from the manga that make this cour feel increasingly like a genuinely new and improved version of BLEACH rather than merely an adaptation.

And when Ichigo’s new Bankai appears, holy shit. Longtime manga readers have spent years wondering what Ichigo’s completed Bankai actually looked like in motion. “Defend You” finally answers that question in spectacular fashion. The horned design with the shackles, the black crescent moon that forms around his attacks, the sheer scale of everything happening onscreen; it is exactly the kind of unbelievable fan wish fulfillment that makes waiting this long worthwhile.

We finally get to see Ichigo’s completed Bankai in motion, and it is jawdropping.

There is also an absolutely astounding continuous shot of this version of Ichigo battling Yhwach that may very well be the most impressive animation sequence this entire series has produced. Every frame is packed with expressive detail, movement, lighting, and imagery. The deep crimsons and blacks throughout the episode are gorgeous, and the direction gives every attack the weight of something genuinely universe-ending.
Shiro Sagisu’s score always deserves its own applause as well.

He understands precisely how enormous every moment needs to feel, whether the episode is building toward triumph, dread, despair, or in this case, some impossible combination of all three. The voice performances are equally fantastic, particularly from Matsuoka and Morita, who are both given opportunities to deliver some of their strongest performances in the entire series, if not the medium of anime in general.

And somehow, the episode just keeps getting bigger. The Uryu (Noriaki Sugiyama / Derek Stephen Prince) and Haschwalth (Yūichirō Umehara) confrontation is also nearing its conclusion, with the anime substantially reworking their battle in ways that give Uryu’s intelligence and determination considerably more weight. It’s awesome to see, as, similar to nearly the entirety of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 45 , their battle is also completely new for even longtime manga fans.

Every major character contributes something, and yet Yhwach remains terrifyingly unstoppable. That is the great trick of “Defend You” and Kubo’s final chapters of his story in general. Every time the episode gives you something to celebrate, it immediately finds a way to rip it away. New power? Yhwach overwhelms it. Rukia joins the fight? Still not enough. Ichigo unveils his Bankai? Somehow, still not enough.

But when Orihime finally finds the strength she has been desperately searching for? BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 45 leaves us with one of the most devastating cliffhangers imaginable. The result is an emotional rollercoaster that never stops climbing. Hype becomes hope, hope becomes dread, dread becomes excitement, and excitement becomes absolute despair before the credits roll.

Even after multiple rewatches, that ending hits like a ton of bricks. It is also fitting that BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 45 feels unlike anything else. There was no conventional preview, no next-episode title teasing what comes next, and the credits arrive in an almost surreal silence. It feels less like watching another weekly episode and more like witnessing a genuine event.

The reaction from fans over the past day has been electric, and the hype feels completely justified. Manga readers and anime-only viewers alike are staring at the screen in collective disbelief because nobody actually knows where this is going anymore. That is an incredible place for BLEACH to be this late in the game.

“Defend You” is cinematic, emotional, visually staggering, completely unpredictable, and packed with so much imagery that I could probably pause every few seconds and find something else worth talking about. This is the new episode to beat. It’s the best episode of the entire series. I genuinely want to watch it a hundred more times.
