We’re nearing the end: Outlander Season 8 Episode 9 is the penultimate episode of STARZ’s centuries-spanning, time-travel romantic drama! It’s been a long road for Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitríona Balfe), but their adventures aren’t over yet.
But first, we have to see what’s up with one of the series’ longest-running fan-favorites: Lord John Grey (David Berry), who appears to be imprisoned in a shed. He’s visited by his stepbrother/sometimes-lover Percy (Michael Lindall) and villainous Captain Richardson (Ben Lambert). Richardson has documents signed by several men, including Percy, testifying that they’ve previously been Lord John’s lovers.
Richardson plans to use the letters to blackmail Lord John’s brother, Hal (Sam Hoare), who’s about to ask the British government to pull their funding from the Revolutionary War. Pulling funds will cause the British to lose the war and their grip on the American colonies. Richardson does not want that to happen. Strange, since Richardson was previously pro-American independence!
A pivotal character is blackmailed, starting Outlander Season 8 Episode 9 on a high note of tension.

“A gentleman does not stoop to blackmail,” Lord John says, begging to be freed. But Richardson reasons that sending Hal the documents will persuade Hal to keep supporting the British cause. Hal’s a man of honor, and publicly revealing Lord John’s sexuality could ruin the Grey family’s reputation.
Percy says he wishes he could liberate Lord John and apologizes for participating in the scheme. Lord John thinks this is lip service, but asks Percy to find William (Charles Vandervaart) and give him a ring with the Grey family crest. “Tell him I love him,” Lord John says, tearfully. Credits! Soak it up while you still can: Outlander Season 8 Episode 9 is one of the last times we’ll ever hear “The Skye Boat Song”.
Jamie and Claire arrive in Savannah after Amaranthus (Carla Woodcock) wrote them about Lord John’s disappearance. She says a package arrived from an “odd, melancholy fellow“. The package contains Richardson’s letter to Hal and the incriminating documents outing Lord John.
William, Jamie, and Claire visit Percy, threatening him unless he gives up Lord John’s location. Percy says Lord John is being held in a boathouse, but isn’t sure where, as Richardson had blindfolded both him and Lord John. Percy hands over Lord John’s ring, and Jamie notices that there’s a word scratched on the inside of it: “Pharos,” which William recognizes is Greek for “lighthouse”.

They deduce Lord John’s being held near a lighthouse on Tybee Island. Percy weakly apologizes for his part in kidnapping Lord John. William threatens to kill Percy if Lord John is found dead.
After sailing to Tybee Island, Jamie and William approach the boathouse while Claire keeps watch for Richardson outside. It feels reminiscent of the time Jamie and Claire had to rescue Brianna (Sophie Skelton) from Stephen Bonnet on an island in Season 5. These later years of Outlander have felt so repetitive. Outlander Season 8 Episode 9, in that regard, is no different.
Jamie and William kill two guards keeping watch before finding Lord John, who has a tearful reunion with William. Jamie finds this touching. Outside the boathouse, Claire threatens Richardson with a pistol and leads him to the boathouse, where Jamie and William tie up. Lord John and William leave to look for more guards, while Jamie prepares their boat for departure.
Richardson demands to be freed, saying Claire has “no idea” what she’s unleashing by stopping him. Claire’s confused. Richardson used to fight for the Americans “for the side of freedom.” Richardson claims American victory will not promise freedom, because the British are about to abolish slavery in their colonies, and America, if it wins the war, will keep slavery legal for another 85 years.
A pivotal, final hour revelation surrounding Richardson emerges in Outlander Season 8 Episode 9.

That kind of hyper-specific futuristic talk only means one thing: Richardson is a time traveler! Who knew we’d get another time traveler in Outlander Season 8 Episode 9? We still don’t know anything about Fanny’s time traveling, as hinted at in Outlander Season 8 Episode 8.
Claire confesses she’s a time traveler, too. Richardson, the descendant of an enslaved woman and her master, hopes a British victory will end slavery on American soil. He says that if he succeeds in securing British victory, the groundwork for the Civil War, segregation, and Jim Crow laws will be undone
Claire admires his commitment to changing history, but says she tried to change history with the battles of Culloden (Season 2) and Alamance (Season 5), and failed. Changing history hits a nerve with Claire, considering Jamie’s impending death at the Battle of Kings Mountain is still ahead. She’s determined to change that part of the future, at least. “No matter how hard we fight, what happens before always happens again,” she says sadly.

“What is this ability for, except to try and make the world a better place?” Richardson asks. Claire agrees to free him if he gives her his word that he’ll truly make the world a better place, just not by resorting to kidnapping and blackmail. He agrees, and she unchains him. But before he can enjoy his freedom, Lord John returns and fatally shoots Richardson. Claire feels Richardson’s death affirms that “history writes itself.”
On returning to Savannah, Lord John thanks Jamie for saving his life and reputation. Jamie says he couldn’t let Lord John die, for the sake of their history, and forgives Lord John for the whole Claire debacle. You know, when Lord John and Claire thought Jamie died, they got married to save Claire from a tricky legal situation, and then had sex to deal with their grief over Jamie.
Of course, Jamie turned out to be alive and beat Lord John half to death over the whole thing. Totally not a huge thing to forgive or gloss over, even if it was a whole season ago! But no matter: Outlander Season 8 Episode 9 is here to hash that out again.
An awkward, dramatic rehash between Lord John, Claire and Jamie finally sees a resolution.

Lord John does not forgive Jamie and storms off. Claire insists Jamie go after him, which he does. Jamie explains how hurt he was by Lord John and Claire having sex, and Lord John insists (for the millionth time) that it was an expression of their mutual grief. They talk it out rationally, which they should’ve done ages ago, and Jamie thanks Lord John for raising William, which Lord John says has been the greatest gift of his life. It just took until this episode of Outlander to resolve things.
They end their little therapy session by playing chess like they used to do at Ardsmuir in Season 3, and are friends again. No time like Outlander Season 8 Episode 9 to repair one of the series longest-running relationships!
While Lord John and Jamie talk, Claire tells William that he is so like Jamie and Lord John. She points out that many members of their family, including herself, Brianna, and Roger (Richard Rankin), were raised by two father figures, and turned out fine. William feels caught between his fathers, and that loving one is a betrayal of the other. “Love isn’t a betrayal, it’s a gift,” Claire says
Speaking of love and betrayal, William ends things with Amaranthus. Guess it’s too hard to get over your fiancée lying about her first husband being dead, even if she did it for her son’s protection! Amaranthus hopes he’ll reconsider, but William declares their relationship over, but wishes her love and happiness. He looks way sadder about the whole thing than she does. When’s William going to get some happiness around here?

Jamie and Claire leave Savannah, smiling at Lord John and William as they depart. Then there is a time jump in Outlander Season 8 Episode 9. They spend the next few months on the Ridge, enjoying their lives with Brianna and Roger, trying not to think of the approaching Battle of Kings Mountain. Brianna and Roger have another son, Davy, adding to the extended Fraser family.
Jamie tells Brianna that he’s fated to die at Kings Mountain. Brianna asks Jamie not to go, and that she has already lost two decades of time with Jamie since they didn’t meet until she was in her twenties. Jamie insists he has to leave for the sake of protecting their family and the Ridge, and comforts a tearful Brianna.
Lord John visits Percy, insisting he pay for his betrayal. Lord John has written an affidavit for Percy to sign, confessing his part in the kidnapping of Lord John, and threatens to kill him if he doesn’t sign. Percy cries, insisting he never meant to hurt Lord John, and asks if he can ever be forgiven. Lord John leaves without answering.
Just outside Percy’s office, Lord John observes the town square in Savannah and hears a gunshot coming from the building, signifying Percy’s death by suicide. Lord John looks remorseful, but leaves without turning back. And that’s the end of Percy Beauchamp, a man who really did love Lord John but loved his own life more.
With the arrival of Benjamin Cleveland in Outlander Season 8 Episode 9, the clock starts ticking.

On the Ridge, Claire shows Jamie something she’s been working on: a story that opens with, “People disappear all the time.” Fans will recognize that line: it’s the opening line of Outlander Season 1 Episode 1 and the opening line of the first book! “You’re writing your story?” Jamie asks. “No, I’m writing our story,” Claire smiles.
But Claire doesn’t have reason to smile for long. At the end of Outlander Season 8 Episode 9, Benjamin Cleveland (Turlough Convery) arrives with a team of men, calling on Jamie. “Ferguson’s on the march in North Carolina,” Cleveland says, summoning Jamie to join the fight for American independence. Cleveland reiterates that Jamie owes him after helping to fight Captain Cunningham in Outlander Season 8 Episode 5.
So, the time has come for Jamie to face the Battle of Kings Mountain. “Though I conquered time itself, I stood powerless as it marched my beloved to a fate I could not change,” Claire narrates. Cut to black! Only one episode left!
Outlander Season 8 Episode 9 rids the series of another major threat, leaving Jamie and Claire to defeat time and history in the finale. If this is the last we see of Lord John and William, it’s a worthy conclusion to their time on the show in this tearful episode of reunions and forgiveness.
