Patches have let game studios latch onto to internet trends in the past, but this one has to be my favorite. Magic: The Gathering Arena, Wizards of the Coast’s virtual version of its titular trading card game, is using its medium to add a new Jimothy bundle to its store.
While some may think that Magic: The Gathering is just about constantly finding and buying different collectibles, one of the things that has drawn me to the game is how it aligns with philanthropic missions. Now, the internet’s pet, Jimothy, is getting his own bundle in Arena.
The home of Wizards, Seattle’s most famous raccoon, has taken over just about every facet of the city’s celebrations. From Mariners games to other teams getting in on the action on social media, Jimothy has become the city’s mascot. Beyond sports, though, Seattle-based video games are also adding the definitive lil’ guy to their games.
ArenaNet was the first to announce a short-spined raccoon crossover in its MMO, Guild Wars 2. Now, Magic: The Gathering Arena is taking it one step further. Not only can you buy a Jimothy Bundle, but Wizards is also making a $10,000 donation to PAWS, a local charity dedicated to animal welfare. Say what you will about studios and companies jumping on internet trends, but this is one I hope keeps happening. With Jimothy right in Wizards’ backyard, it only makes sense for the developers to commemorate the cute critter. Sure, it’s only two cosmetic items, but we’ve all spent in-game currency for less, and knowing that the company has also donated to support wildlife in Seattle? Well, I’m sold.
