Getting into any MMORPG can be intimidating. Getting into one 12 years since launch (10 years in NA/EU) with 32 classes and well known for its system depth? Well, that can feel pretty impossible. And Black Desert Online is well aware of that high barrier to entry, and Hyperboost is how the game is trying to fix it.
During the 2026 Heidel Ball in Southern California, Pearl Abyss developers announced a bevy of new updates that ranged from story and new classes to its updates to leveling and more. But what stuck out in the developers’ announcements was Hyperboost.
After the large announcements like Agent and Edania Part II had their spotlight, the BDO developers switched gears toward quality of life. While this section did include new systems on the way, the largest element of the presentation was announcing answers to previous problems, or building for the future. Part of that was very much about how leveling in BDO is changing.
BDO is changing how you level.

As players get ready to tackle Edania Part II, they’re going to get to do so with a new level cap. Yes, that’s right: the level cap is rising to 75, which ends the idea of gaining endless amounts of experience. Still, the team went a step further than just making the announcement.
The developers went in depth on why and how leveling in BDO was changing, and more importantly, how long it would take to reach 75. Per the presentation, the team let players know that by one to two hours per day, they could reach the new level in about two months. Additionally, the level changes will roll out in two phases, with the first raising the level to 70 on August 12, 2026, and the level to 75 on October 7, 2026.
The team also provided players an in-depth look at how experience will be earned as this change to BDO rolls out. You can see this explained above, which is perfect for the folks looking to optimize their path to 75.
What is Hyperboost?

With 12 years of content, and more on the way, even if Pearl Abyss has elongated the time between new classes, keeping up with content after leaving for a bit or picking up the game for the first time is daunting. And as the game’s life continues globally, that gap between consistent players and those returning and new will continue to grow.
To adjust to this, Pearl Abyss also announced that a new accelerated progression system, called Hyperboost, is coming to BDO. The goal of Hyperboost is to accelerate overall progression, ensuring that players ready to tackle the latest content can do so as soon as possible, without a massive barrier to entry.
If you’re unfamiliar, the Olvia Academy in Black Desert Online is an onboarding and progression system designed for characters that are at least Level 60 and have graduated from a Season server. It provides specialized Combat and Life Skill courses, powerful gear rewards like PEN Blackstar weapons, and substantial amounts of Cron Stones. This was BDO’s first addition earlier this year to help with onboarding.

BDO developers Heechang Lee and Sungil Son explained that, going forward, new and returning players will have an easier onboarding process and will be able to access new content quickly enough to keep up with updates as they happen.
Based entirely around gear score, BDO’s Hyperboost is and will remain free for Adventurers. Hyperboost is also a new permanent fixture in BDO, not just a temporary season event. By using Hyperboost, players get “endgame” level gear within a few days instead of over a month of grinding just to make it to new content to have fun with your friends.
How do you access Hyperboost in BDO?

In simple terms, all new characters that are created are automatically participating in Hyperboost once they’ve completed Season and then the Olvia Academy. Nothing to pay for, and nothing restricting you from getting up to the gearscore needed to take on the latest of Black Desert Online’s content releases.
The developers explained that after Season Graduation, completing the Olivia Academy combat course, and a few other steps, players will reach a 730 Gear Score. With Hyperboost, players will receive an additional PEN (V) Blackstar Weapon when they enter Olivia Academy; after completing the combat course there, players will receive four Obsidian Hammers, which allow players to reach the maximum ancient stack, which will guarantee the enhancement, allowing players to have two additional PEN (V) Blackstar Weapons.
On top of that, players will also receive all of the materials necessary to then move them to Sovereign Weapons (Blackstar weapons, Embers of the Primordial, Gem of Twilight), six PEN (V) Kharazad accessories, and four Slumbering Origin gear pieces, and reduced Challenge time requirement for Garmoth’s Heart.
This is done by rebalancing content and providing powerful items and more to help new and lapsed adventurers progress more easily. The goal of the new system is to condense 40 days’ worth of progression into about 4 days if the player is fully focused on progression.
The easiest way to think about opting into Hyperboost is that it is just a supplement to Olvia Academy, entirely focused on gearscore and getting you ready to play through endgame content. The goal here is to add to Olvia and bridge the gap between where it left players and the endgame.
