After months of teasing, Marvel has revealed the Avengers franchise’s new main character – the last member of a new team who will revamp what ‘Avengers’ means in Marvel lore.
Marvel is currently publishing Avengers: Armageddon, with a superhero vs supervillain war pushing the planet to the brink of World War III. Fans know that after this event, Marvel will begins Avengers Volume 10, with an unusual group of Avengers taking the mantle in a world that no longer trusts superheroes.
That roster was announced as Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Captain Marvel and a mysterious new hero… a hero whose shocking identity we now know.
David Colton Is The New Miracleman
Today’s Avengers: Armageddon #4 – from Chip Zdarsky, Delio Diaz, Frank Alpizar, Jesus Aburtov and Cory Petit – reveals David Colton’s new identity as Miracleman. Marvel had promised this issue would reveal the identity of the Avengers’ new member, and it appears it will be Colton under this new name… or at least, new-ish.
Miracleman (also published under the name ‘Marvelman’) was created in 1954 and has bounced between publishers ever since. Following a legal battle over the rights, Marvel published new editions of the classic series and teased the character’s induction into Earth-616 canon… then fell silent.
Now, several years after Marvel published a host of covers showing Miracleman allying with iconic Marvel heroes, he finally joins the Marvel Universe, with David Colton taking over the identity.
What Are Miracleman’s Superpowers?
Miracleman’s main power is his powerful psionic mind, which can warp reality and his own body. He possesses flight, superstrength, durability and the other standard ‘Superman’ powers, with the twist that the longer he has them, the more powerful they grow. He also possesses a powerful healing factor, telepathy, telekinesis, energy blasts, immortality and super-genius.
Miracleman debuted in 1954 as a kids franchise modeled after Captain Marvel (aka Shazam), but was rebooted in the 1980s by Alan Moore as an incredibly dark anti-superhero story.
