Despite the leaks that shared the reveal of the EA Sports Madden NFL 27 cover athlete, the sports game developer still made the announcement as grand as possible. And they have every reason to. Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams graces the cover of Madden 27, which makes him the first player from the Chicago Bears in the history of the franchise to do so.
While many counted the Bears out after multiple lackluster seasons, new head coach Ben Johnson reestablished Chicago’s place in the AFC North as a team to beat. Williams will appear on both the Standard and Deluxe Editions of the game, with each offering different images of the 24-year-old QB, and the new face of the Bears franchise.
The Standard Edition cover showcases Williams’ signature mid-air throw, while the Deluxe Edition cover features the iconic game celebration that granted him the “Iceman” nickname, as well as his custom nail set featuring the EA Sports logo, Chicago’s flag, and the Chicago Bears logo.
In a release to press, Caleb Williams commented, “Being on the cover of Madden NFL 27 is my childhood dream come true, and to be the first Chicago Bears player to do it makes it even more special,” said Williams. “As a long-time Madden player, I know fans will love what’s new in this game and look forward to getting my rating up to a 99 by the end of the season.”
Why did EA Sports choose Caleb Williams for the Madden 27 cover?
Williams also had a record-setting season, playoff victory, and NFL Moment of the Year with a walk-off, game-winning 46-yard touchdown pass in overtime against the Green Bay Packers, making him one of the most compelling quarterbacks to watch right now.
Not only that, Williams has made a big impact off the field, known as one of the sport’s most distinctive cultural presences, embracing nail art and pushing back against stereotypes of masculinity within the NFL.

What is Caleb Williams’ Madden OVR?
Williams also enters this season with a 90 overall rating in Madden 27 after throwing for 3,942 yards and 27 touchdowns last season, setting the Chicago Bears’ single-season franchise record for passing yards, and leading the team to their first division title since 2018 and their first playoff victory since 2010. If you’re curious, that’s a 15-point increase from his OVR in Madden 26, which was 75 at launch, and rose throughout the season with updates to an 85 OVR.
The combination of former-Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s strategy with a trust in Williams ‘ game-time decisions made this season a stand-out and has them poised to take on the 2026-2027 season with intensity and a major threat to the other teams in the AFC North.

New features coming to Madden NFL 27 will be revealed this Thursday on the @EAMaddenNFL YouTube channel, during the Opening Drive, which will also feature updates on EA Sports College Football 27.

EA Play Members: Can run the league one decision at a time in EA Sports Madden NFL 27 with the EA Play 10-hour early access trial, starting Aug. 6, 2026. Additionally, EA Play Pro Members can play the EA Play Pro Edition beginning August 10, 2026.
