Robin Roberts was absent during Friday’s episode of Good Morning America. She also missed the show on Monday, June 1, as she left the show and the country for an exciting new opportunity. Keep reading to find out all about it.
GMA Robin Roberts Leaves For New Opportunity
Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan are the three main hosts of Good Morning America. They bring relevant news to viewers across the country. However, Robin Roberts was absent on Friday and Monday. Unlike The View‘s Joy Behar, her absence wasn’t an extended break.

Yet, like Joy Behar, Robin Roberts was off the morning program to pursue an exciting new opportunity. She launched her own production company in 2014. Rock’n Robin Productions was behind ABC and Hulu’s Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years After The Storm with Robin Roberts, Netflix’s A King Like Me, and Lifetime’s I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story. The company is producing a documentary on the life and career of Roberta Flack.
Robin Roberts left Good Morning America to travel to South Africa to film an upcoming project starring Sherri Shepherd and Dondré T. Whitfield. The GMA host’s wife, Amber Laign, accompanied her on the trip. Robin Roberts took to social media to let fans know that they had safely landed in South Africa.

“Made it to South Africa for the filming of my upcoming @lifetimetv movie starring @sherrieshepherd & @alldondre,” she wrote on a photo of her and her wife’s feet resting casually in Adidas sneakers.
Movie Tells True Story Of Final 9/11 Rescue
Robin Roberts has produced two documentaries on the 9/11 attacks. Her production company teamed up with Lifetime for another movie under the Robin Roberts Presents banner. Her latest project, Angel in the Rubble, tells the true story of the last survivor pulled from the Twin Towers.
Transit worker Genelle Guzman-McMillan spent 27 hours buried alive after the towers collapsed on September 11, 2001. She was the last person rescued from the rubble. The movie is based on her 2011 memoir of the same name. Sherri Shepherd portrays her in the upcoming movie.
Angel in the Rubble debuts on Lifetime in September to mark the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attack.
Fans React To Exiting New Gig
The book and movie detail a heavy and emotional time in our country’s history. Filming it was likely difficult for everyone involved. However, Robin Roberts and her wife were still able to enjoy the trip to Cape Town, South Africa. The GMA host’s fans encouraged her to have a good time during the trip.
- “good luck with the shoot drink some good white wine while in SA!”
- “Enjoy your time together. You are so amazing and uplifting.”
- “Love you both !! Safe travels!”
- “Enjoy yourself and have fun! You will be missed”
- “Enjoy your time together and much success with filming your movie”
Robin Roberts has spent years making sure the untold stories from 9/11 are finally heard. Stay tuned for more details on the release of Angel in the Rubble.
